Simple Facts About Coronavirus

Coronaviruses cause various diseases in humans and animals, especially in the respiratory, digestive and nervous systems. Clinical findings are fever, sore throat, tiredness and dry cough, joint pain, loss of sense of smell and taste, and other accompanying systematic symptoms. Life-threatening problems such as severe pneumonia, respiratory failure, acute respiratory distress syndrome, septic shock, multiple organ failure, severe acid-base metabolic disorder may develop rapidly.

Sars-Cov-2 usually tends to be transmitted first by respiratory droplets (sneezing, coughing, etc.) and by contact (nose mixing, eye rubbing, face touching, etc.). The virus is sensitive to ultraviolet light and heat and is effectively inactivated at 56 degrees for 30 minutes or with lipid solvents such as ethyl ether, 75% ethanol, chlorine-containing disinfectant, peroxy acetic acid, and chloroform.

For this reason, social distance, masks and hygiene are recommended as the simplest and most effective methods for virus protection and prevention.

In the diagnosis of the disease, the PCR test, which examines the swabs taken from the nose and throat, is primarily controlled. In addition, lung tomography and various blood tests are criteria that support the diagnosis. Of course, these are the methods applied in hospital environments with advanced laboratory facilities.

Many people do not prefer to go to the hospital in this pandemic environment, but also want to have tests. They wonder if the symptoms they are currently experiencing or have recently had are an infection due to the Coronavirus. Here, quick tests (fast test, rapid test) are offered to people to respond to these demands.

These tests have been put into use in our country after a few months of inspections by the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Turkey, after being approved by the relevant units.

There are discussions of false negative or false positive about these tests. But actually these concepts are scientific terms used for all tests. All tests and methods used in medicine are evaluated with these concepts and this is natural. It should not be forgotten that a patient or disease can never be evaluated with a test, method or symptom alone, and if this is done, the possibility of making a mistake increases. This is a medical fact.

Such discussions also exist regarding the PCR method used, for example, in hospitals or laboratories. Even though they do not have symptoms such as cough, fever, sore throat, fatigue, we hear and see many patients who have positive PCR results, or lung tomography findings, low oxygen saturation, increased pulse, respiratory distress and negative PCR results. I wonder if these results do not show false negativity or positivity? Of course it shows.

It is difficult to talk about a scientific absoluteness in medicine, as each patient should be evaluated as a separate individual. "There is no disease, there is a patient" is almost a medical proverb. In other words, each patient should be evaluated in the light of general information but in his own way.

Coronavirus disease and tests are not excluded from this rule. Whether it is PCR or rapid tests, it should be performed by a doctor and evaluated considering the patient's complaints and examination findings. Treatment and follow-up should be arranged according to the result of this consultation.
